The purpose of this presentation is to build on expanding individual therapist and team perspectives and to provide specific research-supported strategies to better inform points of view, reduce biases, and put into immediate practice the evidence-based strategies that will reduce and prevent medical and service errors. When there is a greater collective perspective and understanding that the views and attitudes put forth daily by individuals and teams has a direct impact on client/patient care, then there will be improved best practice services supporting error prevention.

Instructor Information

Lisa Rock

Lisa Rock, M.A., CCC-SLP has provided field support and mentorship for the past 11 years as Area Lead for EBS Healthcare in Florida. She has presented on topics relating to Responding to Intervention, Transitioning into the Clinical Fellowship Experience, Providing Educationally Relevant Services, Preventing Medical Errors, and Making the Language Reading Connection relating to the roles and responsibilities of school-based Speech-Language Pathologists. Lisa has received Honors of the Association Awards for her services as a Board member of the Florida Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Association (FLASHA) as Vice President of Governmental Education and as Board member for the Jacksonville Area Speech-Language Pathologists Association (JASPA). While serving on the FLASHA Board, Lisa earned two ASHA grants for FLASHA supporting advocacy and creating a next-generation information platform. Lisa has served on a variety of committees for these associations and for the Duval County School District. She is a member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) as well as an ASHA ACE Award Recipient, recent ASHA Leadership Mentor, and past ASHA S.T.E.P. Mentor. Lisa is a graduate of the University of Central Florida and James Madison University and is currently licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the State of Florida.

Laura Hum Mitchell

Laura Hum Mitchell, M.A., CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked both nationally and internationally. She has completed her 4th year as Area Lead Mentor for EBS Healthcare in Florida. Laura provides mentoring and support for new Clinical Fellows while acting as a field liaison for EBS, providing Speech Language services to students, and offering strategies and supports to our EBS therapists in the West Coast Florida region. Based on her knowledge-set and experience, she was chosen by her school district to present on the Role of the School-Based SLP as an in-service. Laura has participated in the pilot years of EBS United’s Volunteer Merida, Mexico program and the Immersion program in Costa Rica. Laura has spent summers in Delaware providing educational support and services to children with moderate to severe autism in the State-funded Delaware Autistic Program. Her background in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies provided her opportunities to teach English as a Second Language in South Korea for over two years and had a direct impact on her interest in becoming an SLP. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), an ASHA SIG 11 Affiliate, SIG 15 Affiliate, and SIG 16 Affiliate and an ACE awardee. Laura is a graduate of the Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania and is currently licensed in both Florida and Delaware.

Learner Objectives

By the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and identify current perspectives on what is impacting medical and service errors in medical, clinical, rehabilitative and school settings.
  2. Describe the fundamental importance of knowing about and responding to cultural and linguistic diversity in order to problem solve and prevent errors.
  3. Identify and implement new evidence-based strategies that can make a difference in reducing and preventing medical and service errors by therapists and health care
    provider teams.
  4. Apply two or three new evidence-based strategies in the current workplace setting that supports reducing and preventing medical and service errors.
